Big Orange

I came across this little gem (or is it an orange) of a building last week in Cartago, CA, halfway between the Sierras and Death Valley. I have no idea what its purpose is, there was no signage. It probably won't be around too much longer, as the state of California has plans to turn the 2 lane in front into a 4 lane divided highway in 2015.

White Haven Motor Lodge
1957-2010

It's a sad time around here- The White Haven Motor Lodged closed in late June, after a 53-year run. The Iconic sign, possibly the best neon motel sign I've seen this side of Las Vegas, was disassembled and removed last Thursday. The good part of the story though, is that The Johnson County Museum of History was the winning bidder at auction, and will eventually display after their move to a new and larger facility. The museum is currently in the planning stages to become a National Museum of Suburban History.

Bob Greenspan Photography has already made a donation to the museum, to be used toward restoration of the sign- and I urge others to do the same. Information can be found at www.jocomuseum.org.

Al's Chickenette- Hays, KS, June 2010

What exactly is a "Chickenette" anyway- all I know is it was delicious. After sighting the beautiful neon from a mile away, we had to stop.
